Homemade Flour Tortillas

In our homeschool studies we have often learned of other countries. One of the countries we studied was Mexico and enjoyed making our own homemade flour tortillas. Better on the budget but even a healthier alternative without preservatives.

Homemade Flour Tortillas

Ingredients:

3 cups flour (if you grind your own grain — even better!)

3 Tablespoons (heaping) lard (Crisco)

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

3/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup hot water

Directions:

Cut in lard with flour, baking powder and salt. Add hot water and mix well. Dough will be soft but shouldn’t be too sticky. (if sticky add pinches of flour) Pinch off small pieces, coat in flour, and roll out with a rolling pin into a circular shape. Using a skillet or electric griddle on medium heat, place the rolled out dough - your tortilla. Watch for bubbling and pop carefully as they appear. Once lightly cooked, flip to cook other side. Do not overcook…you want them to remain the white color with very light browning. Carefully remove and place in tortilla warmer or even in foil until ready to use.
